Guest Post from Will Woodgate
There are occasions when you will want a link on your page to do nothing and go nowhere; when you don't want the top item of a menu to do anything more than open the sub-menu, for instance. In such cases you can, as you know, use a script to prevent the button from actually doing anything, or you can enter #void as the link. You'll have noticed that many developers add this as the standard link for their button stacks.
You may also have noticed that clicking a #void link will enter exactly this text into the URL bar. Slightly annoying and completely meaningless. It makes some users wonder what it means.
The # link on its own will cause your browser to scroll up to the top of the page; adding a text to the hash will prevent this action. Instead of #void, you may enter #anything which, when clicked, will cause "#anything" to appear in the URL bar.
Instead of 'void', why not add a text that will make sense to your users, #About, #More or #Partners for instance? Looks much better than #void and doesn't cause your users to wonder what went wrong.
